Postage Paid
a note or letter connects people in ways the digital world cannot recreate
I was asked to explore the challenge of maintaining connections between people. This broad brief lead me to a common theme that we desperately want to be known and that we long for sincere connections with people. During my process of exploration a consistent theme emerged, digital fatigue. This isn’t new and we have all in one form or another experienced noise found on the other side of a screen.
It occurred to me and was confirmed through research that a thoughtfully written note or letter is deeply meaningful and stands out from the numerous emails and maybe is more memorable than a phone call. A letter many said is a gift that has permanence.
A note or letter also allows some both parties to interact in a way that resonates with them the medium take on some of the character of the sender. A letter also provides a safe medium to re-connect.
The question persists why don’t we send more letters. The answers centered around time, materials, and knowing what to write. Those I spoke with named the need for a good paper, a proper envelope, an appropriate pen, and a stamp. However, many articulated the paralysis that they feared if they had all of the right supplies but lacked words.
